Composer, conductor and pedagogue.

 

EDUCATION:

- Academy of Music in Ljubljana: degree in composition (1980, class of Prof. Dane ©kerl) and conducting (1981, class of Prof. Anton Nanut),

- Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst (Academy of Music and Performing Art) in Vienna: degree in composition (1986, class of Prof,. Friedrich Cerha), Master of Arts (1989, mentor H. Goertz), degree in conducting (1988, K. Österreicher and O. Suitner).

 

CAREER:

- coach at the National Opera and Ballet House in Ljubljana (season 1982/1983),

- conductor of the Academic Choir PAZ Vinko Vodopivec (1979-1981 and 1983),

- lecturer of composition  at the Karl-Prayner Konservatorium in Vienna (1988-1990),

- conductor and choir master of the Singkreis Währing in Vienna (1988-1991),

- lecturer (1995) and associate professor of composition, head of music department at the Faculty of Pedagogy, University of Maribor (since 2000),

- professor of composition at the University of Hartford, Connecticut, USA, as part of the Fulbright Exchange Programme (1999).

 

AWARDS AND PRIZES:

- Theodor-Körner-Preis for the opera Ugrabitev z Lauda¹kega jezera (Abduction from the Laudach Lake), Vienna, 1992,

- award of the Slovene Radio and Television (RTV Slovenija) for Requiem, 1993,

- first prize for the cantata Sacrum delirium at the competition for  composers in Gorizia, Italy, 1994.

- first prize for the opera Krython at the international Johann-Joseph Fux Opernkompositionswettbewerb, Graz, Austria 2000,

- award of the City of Maribor – Glazer's document, 2002.

 

OUTPUT:

This composer's creativity  is expressly geared towards the writing of operas, oratorios and cantatas; however his output also includes works for chamber ensembles and choirs, song cycles and orchestral works.

 

OPERAS:

King Malhus, TV opera (1980), Ugrabitev z Lauda¹kega jezera (Abduction from the Laudach Lake), a radiophonic opera, several versions (1992), Pesnik in upornik (The Poet and the Rebel), a horror opera (1996), Krython, a philosophical opera (2000).

 

VOCAL-INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC:

Requiem (1991), Sacrum delirium (1994), cantata;  numerous vocal cycles: Srednjeve¹ke balade (Mediaeval Ballads) for bass-baritone and piano (1983), Three Songs on texts by Gustav Janu¹ for bass-baritone and piano (1984), Minnelieder for baritone and piano (1988), Hommage a Hugo Wolf for soprano and instrumental ensemble, Komplicirani angel (The Complicated Angel) for soprano and instrumental ensemble (1992), Evocazione for soprano and instrumental ensemble (1995), Candor est lucis aeternae for soprano and instrumental ensemble (2001), Kolleritsch Lieder for soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and piano (2003).

 

ORCHESTRAL MUSIC:

Suite (1985), L'amôr sul mar (1987), Gotska okna (Gothic Windows) (1989), Divertimento (1990), Concert de la Nuit (1996), Golden Symphony (2001).

 

CHAMBER MUSIC:

Sonatina for trumpet and piano (1979), Sonata in modo antico for bassoon and piano (1979), String Trio (1985), Quartettino d'archi (1992), Isomerisms for two ensembles, piano, percussion and trombone (1993), Diphthong for saxophone quartet (1997), Mystics for two harps (1999), Infelix ego for flute and string trio (2001), La preghiera di Savonarola for violoncello and piano (2002).

 

MUSIC FOR SOLO INSTRUMENTS:
