THE HISTORY:

The beginnings of international activities of the Society of Slovene Composers, immediately after 1945, are closely linked with the activities of SOKOJ (Savez organizacija kompozitora Jugoslavije - The Association of the Organizations of Composers of Yugoslavia).

After 1972 The Society of Slovene Composers started to protect authors' rights of Slovene composers, in association with some of the largest European music publishers. At the same time "Edicije", the Societys own publishing house engaged in co- productions with publishing houses on the European market.

Between 1945 and 1992, the Society of Slovene Composers was associated with ISCM (International Society of Contemporary Music), although this was still within the framework of SOKOJ. In 1992 it became an independent member of the ISCM.

Initially, international contacts consisted mainly of regular participation of the Society at the World Music Days. Later, we started to organize exchange concerts, first with the neighbouring, then also with other European countries: Austria, Croatia, Italy, Spain and others. Many new exchanges are planned, some forming part of cultural agreements between countries at the government level.

Pavel Mihelcic had been the leader of the ISCM section for many years. It is his merit that the World Music Days in 2003 will be held in Slovenia, from Septemebr 29th to October 3rd. This, so far greatest international all-Slovene musical event, represents the climax of the Societys strivings over the past 60 years, as well as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream of Slavko Osterc, our first delegate at the ISCM in 1934-39.

Alongside with Pavle Mihelcic, many Slovene composers and performers have contributed to the realization of this project.

The reputation of the Society of Slovene Composers is enhanced by those Slovene members who live abroad: H. Artac, B. Arnic-Lemez and A. Ipavec in Austria, A. Gerzinic in C. Kren in Argentina, V. Globokar between Italy and Germany, S. Jericija and P. Merku in Italy, J. Jezovsek and I. Majcen in Germany , B. Kos in Australia, K. Mizerit in Canada, J. Oblak and P. Sifler in the USA, B. Rodosek in Switzerland.
